When I first began combing fandom for some tales of Spideylove, I was surprised and then indignant to learn that even with his inherent awesomeness on the page and in cartoons, and even with a trilogy of block-busting movies shoring him up, Stan Lee's best-loved son does not get ficced all that often. Incomprehensible. Dude, the guy can stick to the ceiling. Clearly, he was meant to be porned early and often. Think of the possibilities!

My consolation is only that that those few who do write about him tend to be some of the most stellar scribes in fandom, so really, does he have to have a porn armada for me to feel fannish justice has been served? Is it only size that matters? Am I that kind of girl?

On this eve of New Year's Eve at the end of the first decade of the 21st century, I bring you the gift of Trek. Not the film, but the television franchises- including the cartoon version that delighted kids on Saturday morning television for two seasons in 1973 and "74.

geocities!fail: all is not lost

As I slowly and rather randomly update The Rex Files (the best darn adult fan fiction recommendation site ever), I find myself mostly scoping out and working around the damage that Yahoo! wrought when they took GeoCities offline in the fall. Since GeoCities was one of the first free options for webspace that users really took advantage of Back In The Day, thousands of older archives and personal sites literally disappeared overnight. Some of these sites and the stories on them are simply gone forever. But I'm having a lot of luck with recovering work thanks to the absolutely indispensable advent of The Wayback Machine.

The WBM is one of those endeavors that is such a lovely and intelligent idea it seems like it could never actually happen. More properly known as The Internet Archive Wayback Machine, it's a free service that (among other things) allows people to visit archived versions of web sites, including many older sites that have gone offline for whatever reason. This takes some of the bite out of Yahoo's decision to demolish GeoCities. You will need to grab the old GeoCities URL to search on the WBM.

Also: I've found that if they're still active in fandom, many old school writers who utilized a GC site early on have, by now, created a newer personal archive on a different server, so Google away (pen name and title often work, or pen name and "fanfiction"; for a deeper search, try adding "database" as a keyword). Many, too, have made a move to places like LJ and the new search options here make looking for them a lot easier than it would have been a month or so ago. If you can't find them on here, I also suggest InsaneJournal, Dreamwidth, Skyehawke.com or The Organization for Transformative Works' awesome Archive of Our Own. I wish you happy hunting!

I'm so screwy, I tell ya. Not only do I love to read, but I love to write about reading. And it only gets screwier, because lately, I been reading about writing. And just to nail the whole thing to the floor so we all lose our security deposit and everyone's mad, today I am writing to you about stuff I read about writing that I think you oughtta read too.

Required Reading

It's entirely possible to know how to do something and do it wonderfully without being at all able to explain how it is done. It's also often true (as many an LJ author can attest from some of the comments they get) that one can adore something without being able to articulate why one finds that thing adorable. Author Resonant is very fortunate in that she can not only spin heart-stopping fan porn, she can also pin-point exactly what makes it work, what she's after in writing it and how the fuck she gets there. Being able to spot and articulate the precise places where eroticism works or fails makes her classic How to Write a Sex Scene one of the most intelligent and practical pieces of writing on writing I've had the pleasure of reading.

"Write what you know," all my professors and editors urged me in an unending chorus over the years. Which'd be just swell except that periodically, my imagination chimes in and will not be silenced. Damned inconvenient a thing for a writer to have, an imagination. Luckily, though, there is the magical gift of research, the great equalizer. Thanks to research, in spite of my never having flown a rocket, solved a crime or lived in the Jazz hey days of the American 1920's, I still have a shot at writing competently and even convincingly about doing exactly such fantastic things.

This is certainly true about slash fiction. For although I do have more than a passing acquaintance with penis-bearing individuals, simply taking my m/f sexperiences and adding another boner (minus my boobies and hoo hoo, of course) is not the mathematical formula for detailed realism in scribing a mano a mano fuck interlude. Luckily, the lovely Minotaur left a great legacy for all future ficcers when he created this illustrated and detailed primer page entitled, Sex Tips for Slash Writers.

A studious sit-down with this frank and well-written treasure may not actually clue you in on what it is to sport wood, but it's as close as you need to come to fathom the basics of operating said wood in a fictional sex type way. Bookmark it and start boning up.

Are your heroes' pupils "blown wide" with erotic dilation? Are they so close to some sort of oncoming orgiastic seizure that their partner must "gentle them" with soothing caresses? As a reader, do you sometimes go wading into an adult fan fic and discover way too late into the action that the sex scene is a patchwork of details swiped from the last stories 20 you've read? Author CM Decarnin feels your pain and dismay. Her essay Phrases I'm Getting Mighty Tired Of rattles off some of fanon's most frequently-nicked slang, verbs and descriptors along with a short addendum of phrases and words that are constantly being mangled. Just as relevant and indispensable now (sadly) as it was when she originally posted it five years ago.

Killa's observations on and tips about the beloved art of Photographic Manipulation are as instructive as they are accessible. Easy-to-follow and generous in specifics, this essay invites readers in so companionably that even the most graphically-challenged of authors is bound to come out the other end emboldened to give manipping a go. She just makes sound so damn fun.

Other Fancy Stuff

Boasting a gallery of 62,672 photos tagged to a lengthy listing of fetishes, Masculinfinity is the go-to resource for fan artists seeking source material for photomanipulation or any other project requiring images of built guys posed in slashy abandon. It's free, it's giant, it's mansexxing.

The Ultimate Male Masturbation Resource (AKA "Jackin' World") is an educational and entertainingly instructive site that has been giving up the skinny on male onanism since 1996. JW offers advice, articles, humor and educational info on creative cock-touching that can be mighty helpful for those writers who may not actually have a willing boner for on-hand reference while writing scenes of either solo or mutual masturbation featuring male characters.

Even a word as magical as "cock" can get old after you use it 20 times in a paragraph. In porn- as in life- repetition can be deadly. But you know a writer's getting desperate when they bust out the medical terminology right in the middle of a sex scene. Damn, baby. How awkward is it when a character suggests "coitus" or starts talking "pre-ejaculatory fluid"? Unless it's Spock, Data or some sorta computerized space station that's developed self-awareness, that kinda lingo is bound to jerk a reader right out of the action- and that is just not the kinda jerking you're looking for. Thank god there's MondoErotica's Porn Thesaurus. This site will expand your smut-talking horizons to planet-size. So bookmark it and forget all about anatomical shop talk or resorting to euphemisms like "hot-buttered mancob". Unless. Ya know. That's the kinda thing your character tends to say.

Aw. Not only did nobody defriend Further over the Biblefics I recced, I actually got a couple more readers. And after all the huffing and puffing I did! Oh Me of Little Faith.

Currently up to my pretty little neck in Highlanderdom, ferreting out Duncan/Methosness of the most outstanding quality for The Rex Files update. I've also compiled a gigantic heap of Arthur/Merlin fiction as well- both fandoms are bulging with talented writers and breath-taking tales, it turns out. Thanks to that, I am in the midst of epic flailing and may have to stop editing for a few zooms around my neighborhood in the new wheels just to take the edge off. If anyone knows of a fansite where there are decent-sized screencaps or photos of Peter Wingfield and/or Adrian Paul, suggest away. I'm coming up with absolute shite.

The doubleplusgood reckage medieval hotness is only one of the glowing pokers in my highly stoked fire. Unbeknownst to you, I have been working in fiendish secrecy the last month or so and my evil toiling is almost at fruition (insert wrong-headed cackle of your choice). Dude, I tried, okay. I brought the full force of my fic finding fu to bear and got not. So, despite hysterical hyperbole to the contrary, it turns out that, no, Virginia, the internet is not crowded with volumes and volumes of Christ!Slash. Nor does fandom runneth over with Bible!Slash, either.

I'll tell you what there is a shitload of, though. Articles, essays, pages and posts, threads and chats, comments and blog entries written by people damning all of fan fiction and absolutely freaking out because of Biblical fan fiction. In fact, I can say without exaggeration that for the couple dozen or so examples of this fandom that I unearthed after hours of digging, there are at least 2 or 3 thousand items online declaring that such stories are going to trigger Helter Skelter and must be stopped now. NOW. Before God sees them!!!!

Two things were on my mind as I discovered all this.

1. The people who have the most to say about fan fiction always seem to be those who know the least about it.

2. Considering how many novels, plays, operas, songs, comic books, movies, historical texts, TV shows, documentaries and cartoons Jesus has turned up in, He's amazingly under-ficced in fandom. All those Bible Guys are. When's the last time you read any Moses Gen? Or Holy Spirit/Virgin Mary Het? The Bible's been on the Best Seller List, what, 2000 years now? And the Prequel's been rockin' since who even knows- 3,000 BC? Something staggering along those lines.

And in all that time, I got maybe 30-40 fics to show for it.

And those 30 or so fics provoked 10,000 opinions.

Screwy.

Anyway, since half my Flist is probably gonna delete me over this entry, might as well get down to it. Merry Christmas. Let the smiting begin.

I wonder how long the above image will remain on Photobucket before somebody flags it and it gets deleted from my album. I think it's time to shop for an image-hosting site that is more tolerant of revealing bulges and the occasional bit of cockbeard peeking out provocatively. It's not like I post full-frontal photo-essays on the Male Unit, but I'm all about the Female Gaze and artfully rendered photomanipulations hinting at the possible existence of bona fide wang. On a personal note, I had a consult with a specialist today, took some x rays & if I continue with what I'm doing, in around 18 months-2 years, I will be an excellent candidate for corrective surgery. I'll need a lot of rehabbing and I'll still be in a wheelchair for the next couple of years, but knowing that I will be back to hoola-hooping, running from cops and putting my feet up on the coffee table once more is really a bad-ass X Mas present that I was not expecting. Knowing that I have those things to look forward to, I am more than happy to do whatever I gotta do in the meantime. Totally fantastic, I am a very lucky girl.

Stories set in Sam and Dean's shared past are some of the most powerful, personal works in the Supernatural fanon. Obviously, family and childhood drama have always afforded writers a wealth of transcendent themes. But when laid over the framework of horror and the intense particulars of the Winchesters' canonical backstory, the possibilities for a gifted author become layered and limitless.

Nerds By Number

This is my geeky idea of a good waste of time. Since there's no shame in my game, I assembled two massive picspam maps of famous nerds, both RL and fictitious, who have risen to the level of icon in our screwy Western culture. The first of these ridiculous constructs is complete: Nerds By Number features 51flavors of dork, geek, brainiac, Melvin and smart-ass, many of whom will be familiar, but only a real nerd would recognize them all. Give up? Then hit the Nerds By Number Answer Map, yo. And stay tuned for Part II: Name That Nerd. Word.

My enthusiasm for this blog is so pure and large that you may find yourself itching to taizer me if I don't rein it in. It moves me to flailing, it does. AlertNerd is the kind of genuine, smart and cheeky that I will surf through dozens of slick, pushy commercial-crammed sites daydreaming of. Their laid-back, sharp-witted take on all things nerdy conveys a sense of warmth and fun. The writers at AlertNerd are not here to shove product up you or impress themselves with in-joke lingo and obscure references. Rather, their choice of topics and the way they present them speaks of RL where folks are broke and responsible but need a minute of ME time to embrace their inner hipstergeek, mock the idiotic, squee about the awesome, and continue to thrive like mad.

NerdWorld: NerdSpace

NerdWorld.Org is one of those cool little mystery spots that make me glad I have a having a randomizer on my google fu. It appears to be an altruistic collective of techgeeks ever keen on helping strangers overcome technical trouble arranging computers into networks. (The NerdWorld: Mission Statement explains this with a lot more clarity). I have no idea what it is that people do once they created a network, nor do I exactly comprehend what one is, but I like altruism and I'm quite fond of strangers helping. Cheers to NerdWorld.

Although I may never avail myself of their offer, I am still recommending a project connected to the collective's homepage. The NerdWorld page is a sort of nerdy single point of access to many other sites- essayists, political chatting, trade blogs, assorted technofun and cultural satire. But the link that caught my eye was NerdWorld's virtual space html. It shows an animation of our lovely blue homeworld, Terra Prime, as seen from space and the page features software that charts the last 16 hours of global cloud cover and current position of sunlight on the Earth's surface. If you have kids or if you, like me, have a kidlike heart, this page makes a nice bookmark for days when you need just a pinch of Zen to put all the bullshit into perspective for a minute.

Speaking of Zen and perspective, here I go reccing this ubernerd video yet again. Carl Sagan, sampled from his maverick Cosmos miniseries, beatboxes and raps in his astral-yet-grounded Trip Hop debut, featuring a cameo by Da Hawk, Professor Stephen Hawking.

There are, at least, interesting factoids woven into HFC's blurbage and her tastes run from the meta to the rare and obscure, the cultish. A broad reach is always a plus in Further's estimation.

Shirtless Superheroes

I admit that it's the evil!nrrrdy side of me that is drawn to this site. So many of the featured panels offer well-known characters shirtless in situations which, once removed from their original context, open up wide for slashy innuendo. Sometimes these selected items are so charged with accidental gay overtones that they stand on their own as subversion; sometimes I can't help but erase what ever's in the dialogue balloon and ratchet things up with my own brain-damaged remixing. If that kind of sophomoric stuff makes you giggle, you'll adore this blog as I do. It goes (unintentionally) to show just exactly how much subtext most comic heroes contend with simply by virtue of centering on buff dudes who wear ultrasheer body stockings to work.

Like any savvy afficienado of fan fiction, I'm sure you already have RatCreature's LJ bookmarked and regularly avail yourself to the recommended reads posted there. I've always been particularly partial to RJ's personalized icons and any of her artwork that features her cartoon avatar. Only recently, though, did I stumble on to where Rat Creature's been so humbly keeping the bulk of her art offerings. Showcased far from the maddening crowd, RC's site at WordPress features everything from sketches to beautifully detailed pen and ink work, revealing yet another side of this fandom mainstay's vast talents.

Props to the discerning eyes at Heroes'n'Hunks for bringing CrisArt to my attention. The fannish images H'n'H showcased in one of their wonderful Artist Spotlight features so delighted me that I tracked this artist down from her former digs at Yaoi!Gallery until at last relocating her at DeviantArt. Not for the easily startled, Frank Chavez's sizable online gallery warehouses a crossverse of DC and Marvel heroes compromised in just about every sex scenario and configuration imaginable. BJ Fletcher

BJ Fletcher combines photomanipulation, airbrush illustration and comic book artistry to create slashtacular portraits of heroes from both DC and Marvel. His BlogSpot site has a nice-sized archive worth browsing through for fans seeking unique eroticized versions of fave caped wonders either posed solo or amid amorous antics with popular pairings like Wolverine/Gambit, Batman/Robin and other oft-ficced couples.

Cool67

I can guarantee that only a favored few will appreciate this artist, but what the hell- at least spare a gander. If you don't get it, then you don't. But if you do, it will bring you a rare kind of delight. For whatever mysterious reason, Cool67 has done portrait after portrait of his favorite superheroes, sports stars and other male celebrities- all of them posed playing guitar, xylophone, drums, bongos, the vibes and any number of other instruments. I can offer no explanation for why he does this, but just the fact that he does so with such reckless abandon over and over speaks of the purity and obsessiveness and love that denotes a genuine fan. Not the most accomplished artist, what Cool67 lacks in skill is more than compensated for in pure, unrivaled absurdism. Adorable and quite possibly insane.

Where: The Shrine of Jared Padalecki's Ass
What: video love, fanning, celebrity testimonials, a photo gallery and a virtual butt smacking feature.

Because I'm how I am, I ruminate sometimes about the blossoming of Jared Padalecki that has transpired since the Texan took on the role of Sam Winchester on Supernatural. Looking back on those early episodes and promo shots, there's no way to fathom what could have motivated the evil perpetuated upon our Sam by the show's stylists- except to assume there must've been a high-stakes wager behind the scenes to see how bad a haircut and wardrobe could the boy suffer and still radiate 21st century foxiness.

Padalecki endured this rough treatment for countless episodes and might still be suffering even now but for a magical transformation that took place. In tandem with Sam's expansion as a character, the actor seemed to expand (quite literally) into his instrument (as they call it in thespian parlance). Before the eyes of millions, Padalecki got his personal trainer mojo in working order, and commenced blooming into the stacked display of masculine beauty we see before us today.

As this delightful journey from boy-to-man took place, even the mooks in Supernatural's hair and wardrobe departments seem to have grudgingly released our dear boy from their torture chamber, at last coiffing and clothing Padalecki in a manner far more befitting his natural splendor.

To celebrate this now unabashedly glorious tall, cool drink of water, let us all pause in our hectic RL day and pay a visit to The Shrine of Jared Padalecki's Ass where we may reflect for a moment on this Cinderella story and our long-standing role as witnesses. After all, Supernatural fans were never confused about or distracted from what lay beneath those goofy locks and baggy redneck garb.

Slave!fic resides somewhere in the same controversial fiction neighborhood as non-con, mind control and ye old fashioned bodice-ripper. It's an arena that can be easily fraught with peril for a writer with any brains at all since even its tamest renderings can be seen to suggest the eroticization of rape. But this neighborhood is also where cononical "reality" is departed from in fan fiction, since slave!fic almost always demands a degree of or all-out departure from canon, taking the action straight into an Altered Universe.

Some authors try address what they see as the consent conundrum by nudging the story into a kind of morality play about the nature of slavery within that Altered Universe. While that might open things up for intrigue and adventure, usually the mixed motivation behind this move ends up failing because in the end it is often a trope undertaken without serious consideration of its impact on the development of plot. An essay on history or sexual ethics is a fine and righteous thing. But in the realm of erotica, sexual fantasy and fiction, going into the work there is only one law: However well--meant, if anything layered into the story does not serve the story, in the end it is the story that suffers.

You can moralize and explore rebellion and oppression in a sexual slave!fic. Just make sure you draw bloody good fiction from it and I'll be right there with you to the end. Otherwise the result is the same as it would be in any piece of writing ill-considered from the jump.

In RL, there's no confusing getting the crap beat out of you and being a dancing girl in an alien warlord's harem. I am drawn to the slave!fic I'm drawn to exactly because it is so far removed from reality- even the reality of the fandom it's spun from. My lady parts and my brain are my two very best pals and they keep me from kicking stupid people in the ass all day long. If I want to send them on a short, psychic vacation where they get to do The Dance of the Seven Veils for a lusty sultan from 1950's Mars, then my biggest concern with you as my literary travel agent is Can You Take Me There? And can you write it beautifully, lovingly, magically enough to make it stick?

Does that make me shallow? Doubtfully. Because a writer has to work some mighty strong mojo to pry me out of my Now. I have my two ferocious buddies to answer to, after all. And if that makes me a lousy feminist, you better make sure you give me some room next time you see me at a reproductive rights rally or marching to Take Back the Night. You wouldn't wanna catch my wrong-headedness, after all.

Dear Sam:

Please accept my sincere regrets for all the unavoidable collateral damage during our last get-together. Had I known you were planning to visit me at work, I certainly would have cleared my calendar and given you the whole afternoon. Rather than lingering morbidly on the events of that unlucky exchange, let's look forward, shall we? Towards what I see as our spectacular future.

While I realize we haven't gotten off to an ideal start, I am nothing if not a patient negotiator- surely you can't believe it was a coincidence that a career in lawyering was once so attractive to you.

Sam, I'll admit it; I was not expecting to face such a determined (and elusive!) strategist when I relocated to this veil of tears from my former incarceration. I can see now that I was naive and unwise to rely so completely on our former friend, Ruby, who- despite her considerable precociousness- was, after all, but a junior staffer in my vast organization. Your contribution is far too pivotal to be pawned off on the per diem help. I am more than committed to do whatever it takes to get you on board and make our impending merger as smooth and drama-free as possible from this point on.

There are several minor items remaining on my To Do List before it will become absolutely necessary to transition our situation. I apologize for this delay, however brief. I can only assure you that these small matters will be of immediate benefit once you and I reach an agreement and we finally move on to the more significant task of enslaving all of humanity in horrifying anguish for all eternity.

In the meantime, I suggest you enjoy some much deserved down time. A day at the spa, a real haircut, maybe a little wardrobe rehabilitation via those wonderful little credit frauds you Winchesters are so clever at perpetuating. Shoot the works, Sam, that's my suggestion. Travel, have some kicks, enjoy some fun with that extremely feisty brother of yours, brush up on your Latin. Whatever it is you do to unwind- I might even suggest you reconsider that newly acquired sobriety of yours. I gotta hand it to the guy. I never woulda believed anybody could pry Dean Winchester off of Sam's many-storied and sweet little rear end in this fandom's fiercely devoted slashtimation. Never. But you'd have to be made of granite not to fall for Cas. I mean, talk about an entrance, first of all. And if you're thinking up overtures that might catch a guy's notice? Busting him out of Damnation is hard to beat. And as for a declaration of intense intent, soldering your hand print onto a fella sends a pretty clear message, yo.

And all that? Was just one episode.

I wasn't even writing about Star Wars is the thing of it. Not that what I was working on was any less nerdy, though. It was my first big project in cultural anthropology and I was trying to argue a parallel between the transitory nature of mythology and the way comic book canon changes as the characters are passed from artist to artist, writer to writer. Like I said: nerdy times Pi.

My project led me to the writings of Joseph Campbell, and this was how I found out that no matter how much you think you know about Star Wars, there will always be more. Since I had many latent and blatant Jediish guypals in my vast social orbit, I assumed that by proxy, I had at least a good second-hand grasp of the fandom's zillion or so lesser-known quirks and canonical secrets. So I wasn't expecting that digging up Campbell's stuff dated from 1977 on also meant digging up the power-lines of his most obsessively apt pupil, who turned out to have been a 30-something George Lucas.

I always imagined George Lucas existing in a very dense psychological and creative vacuum, consumed by his own internal prompts and the translating of those prompts into tightly-controlled product. Which isn't far off the mark. The notion of him turning to the 20th century's most published and distinguished mythologist for direction in creating his epic Space Western just seemed so... I dunno... sane and intelligent and deep. Monastic, even. Not the kinda think you picture a blandly sour megalomaniac doing.

In fact, Campbell himself was initially stunned (and later delighted) that Lucas credited the mythologist for supplying Star Wars with the construct and framework in which the director crafted his canon. Chiefly, Lucas took to heart Campbell's posit that despite surface differences, all cultures share a great many stories in common and that if one looked back through what we know of the world's folklore, dogma and literature, you will find particular dramas and characters are a unifying constant- even among peoples who sprang up on opposite sides of the globe centuries apart.

That's a pretty deep notion.

And it startled the hell out of me to think of George Lucas being so almost religiously spurred into action by an idea so heavy and sensible, so almost metaphysical. Just trying to imagine him using the word "archetype" was weird enough. But finding out he not only knew what an archetype was but had based his life's work on creating his own versions of them... it's not that I thought George was stupid. I just thought he was angry, controlling and oblivious.

And he was. Is.

But.

But...

When he read Joseph Campbell as a young man, he saw what I saw reading it decades later. He followed Campbell's theoretical connect-the-dots and when he stepped back to see the big picture that these ideas conjured when laid together, he saw all of humanity unlock and swing wide open like some great big Jungian puzzle box. Just like I stepped back and saw. And he became transformed in a major soul way.

I had never even considered the possibility that George Lucas might have soul.

I still think he's a mean-spirited crank who directs film like my ass chews gum. But learning why a person so stingy in spirit and bitchy in action was able to create those first two truly spectacular movies... well... this gave me the strangest feeling that long before he became a confused and boring jerk, he had been kind of wonderful for a moment. Kind of brilliant and awestruck and generous, connected to all of the people who had ever told stories all over this little blue world we live on, all of its stories and yearnings and that shared, mysterious imagination we've been inheriting and inheriting since the begin of civilization. And while he was that guy, he wrote Star Wars.

Of course.

It's unsettling and fab how erotic this whump!dean image is. Let us gaze upon it and then never speak of it again in polite company. If I can't always claim that Further is the most tightly-written journal around, there's no denying the consistent quality of eye-candy I toss on here to distract you. Think of these visual enticements as your consolation prize for being a sometimes poorly-used guest on the game show of my LJ.

Why I chose to go with a whumpage theme today is that I'm making note that I'll be taking The Rex Files offline to pretty it up for the oncoming year. Since all announced online deadlines are blatant lies, I shan't insult you by making a bold declaration like, "Oh, it'll be back up on New Year's Day!" I know you are far too sophisticated and Net savvy to fall for a promise like that.

Now let me just say this: I am well aware that nothing I say at this moment can comfort you all and that no matter how brief this interruption of access is, it's gonna be a very painful time for everyone everywhere. The Rex Files is such a crucial resource, an almost mystical portal to shunt people away from our ugly wartime reality and thrust folks into millions upon millions of sexy, fantastic worlds far beyond humanity's most daring imaginations. I know- trust me: I Feel. Your Pain.

I can only vow upon my stack of ancient Wolverine comics that I shall be steadfast and nimble in my work to ensure that this horrible and cruel absence will last no longer than is absolutely necessary for the greater good of all. Don't think of me as heroic for this oath- nor for my creating The Rex Files to begin with- no. Think of me, instead, as being just like you- you and the countless thousands of others who will be bereft and cast adrift during this revamp, not knowing which dirty story to read, which author to turn to for quality craftsmanship and onanistic encouragement, lost and hurting and directionless and scared in a vast digital wilderness booby-trapped with illiterate blow-hards and doofuses who make fucking sound about as fun as licking a rolling pin.

I'll be right there, shoulder to shoulder with all of you, suffering with stoic dignity. And if you chance to glimpse a slight shimmer in my eyes as I fight to keep a brave face, don't fret for me. I know that really it is all of you who are truly the heroes, bravely bearing up to this metaphysical darkness, this metaphorical toothache throb in your lady parts and lively minds, a dull and constant ache that you cowboy up to like the awesome little buckaroos that you so are.

So no; don't call me a hero. You're the freaking heroes. You, man. It's all you.

Anyway, I'm just going to be cleaning out dead links, re-assessing recs and adding a new fandom or two, but my OCD lifeplan clearly demands that any sorting out, organizing or straightening up begins with making an even more terrific mess than what was there to begin with. It's a truism for my housekeeping, love life and schoolwork, so why should it be any different for my porn directory?

The fandoms to be added are still up in the air - largely because my follow-through on projects depends on fluctuating crap like meds, how my day is going and the varying amount of expected and unexpected phonecall/foot traffic to hit my apartment at any given time. Merlin is definite, though. Other fandoms I'm flirting with for inclusion are Angel and Tim/Kon but of course, you know, I might just say Fuck It, I'm Pooped and just stick with Merlin/Arthur for now.

Another definite addition is that I'll be posting Slash Addict's author directory on the site as it's updated A-Z. It would be cool for people to have a page where they could discover writers both recent and from back in the day. Anything that creates another point of access so that authors can get their work read is a good, good thing.

With that in mind, I've also started compiling links with an eye towards adding a listing of archives that cater to smaller and/or older fandoms. The Professionals, Biblical slash, Starsky & Hutch- things along those lines.

The only other important news in NrrrdyGrrrl's nerdy, girly world is on the matter of the long-suffering Logan/Remy Slash Archive.

After some sleuthing around and the long and short of it is that the tireless and steadfastly decent people at Wayback Machine, the Internet Archive have painstakingly saved the original Wolverine/Gambit archive in its entirety. If I lay out the graphics and open the link library, I can have the reboot online in a matter of weeks. At first, all of the work will be linked to WB archived pages, but the site will be up and open for traffic- which kicks considerable ass in my humble estimation.

The Holmesian fandom is its own unique animal for any number of reasons- its global reach, the diversity of the fanbase, its compartmentalization from other fandoms, its peerless longevity. But my interest in Sherlock Holmes as a fandom lies in it's being the cradle of "modern" fan fiction itself.

Certainly there are earlier examples of fiction for fans. Arthurian legend leaps to mind, though as a Yank, I'm more prone to think of the confabulations about folks like Daniel Boone or even George Washington. But these many-storied icons swerve back and forth over the line between folklore, mythos and literature; they draw from no direct, fixed originating canon. Stories that spring from a particular work which are written by fans of that work for other fans is a singular endeavor unheard of until Sir Arthur Conan Doyle began publishing his Holmes stories.

The Holmesian pastiches were a hallmark of this fandom almost immediately, circulating around Victorian England even while author Arthur Doyle was still serializing in The Strand. And Doyle's canon was optimal for ficcing; both the consulting detective and his narrative partner often referred to a cases that never materialized as canonical efforts. This created a wealth of possibilities for ambitious fans who imagined these adventures and promptly set out generating what would eventually become a vast collection of fan-created case studies.

A hundred and 20-plus years later, such tales are still being penned and published by Doyle's fans- online, in 'zines and magazines, as comic books, in collections and novels, sometimes even as film scripts and plays. The Holmes pastiches have achieved a literary legitimacy and acceptance that no other fan fiction has. Even though it's arguable that Star Trek and Star Wars fan fiction are both equally as prolific and varied, because of the literary origins of the original work and its historical importance in publishing, Holmesian fan fiction, while still somewhat sneered upon, is usually met with much less resistance and idiocy and can even occasionally garner critical praise.

I point all of this out not to elevate the status of Holmesian fan fic above others, and not because I am all that rabid an enthusiast- though I've certainly read the canon and countless collections of fanworks. I am simply making note that as much abuse as fan fiction is subjected to academically, critically and otherwise, when I reflect on the consistent history of the Holmes fanon in all its incarnations, it gives me hope. I like the idea that in a hundred or two hundred years, truly gifted authors will still be scribing adventures for Kirk and Spock and Bones, for Batman and Buffy.

But beyond that imagined future, I'm thinking about the manner in which Holmes fan fiction is regarded at large as having genuine artistic merit beyond the fandom. Perhaps I am a romantic shithead, but if it's possible for one fanon to stubbornly bully its way to acceptance and achievement, it must be possible that another could. And another after that. Figuring in the velocity of information sharing today as opposed to most of the last century or so, it seems certain that we won't be waiting a hundred years to see if I am correct.
